Simple Things to Know Before Traveling to Korea!

October 10 2024 | Adam Kim
South Korea is a country that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with cutting-edge technology, offering travelers a unique and vibrant experience. Whether you're drawn by the allure of K-pop, the beauty of its landscapes, or the richness of its history, there are several things you should know before traveling to Korea to make the most of your visit.
First, South Korea is a shopper's paradise, and one of the perks for international visitors is the availability of duty-free and tax-free shopping. Duty-free shops are typically found in international airports, large department stores, and popular tourist districts like Myeongdong in Seoul. These stores offer a wide range of products, including luxury goods, cosmetics, electronics, and fashion items, all exempt from import duties and local taxes.
In addition to duty-free stores, many regular shops throughout the country offer tax refunds for tourists on purchases above a certain amount (usually around 30,000 KRW). To take advantage of tax-free shopping, look for stores displaying "Tax-Free" signs. You’ll need to present your passport at the time of purchase. After buying, keep your receipts and fill out the necessary paperwork, which can be processed at the airport before departure. Refunds can be received in cash at refund counters or credited back to your card.
Also, South Korea boasts an efficient and affordable public transportation system, with extensive subway, bus, and train networks. The subway systems in cities like Seoul and Busan are particularly easy to navigate, with clear signage in both Korean and English. Consider purchasing a T-money card, a rechargeable smart card that can be used on all public transportation, including buses, subways, and some taxis. This card can also be used in convenience stores, making it a handy tool for everyday transactions.
Surprisingly, South Korea experiences four distinct seasons, each offering unique travel experiences. Spring (March to May) is perhaps the most beautiful time to visit, with cherry blossoms in full bloom and mild weather making outdoor activities enjoyable. Autumn (September to November) is another favorable season, with cooler temperatures and stunning fall foliage. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid, with the possibility of monsoon rains, while winter (December to February) brings cold weather and snowfall, particularly in the northern regions. If you’re planning to visit in winter, be prepared for freezing temperatures, especially if you intend to explore mountainous areas. Now before you travel, it’s helpful to download essential apps like KakaoTalk (the most popular messaging app in Korea), Naver Map (a reliable navigation app), and KakaoTaxi (for hailing taxis). These tools will make it easier to communicate, find your way around, and navigate the local culture. Additionally, it's worth checking for any travel advisories or entry requirements related to health or safety before your trip.
By being mindful of these tips, you'll be well-prepared to enjoy everything that South Korea has to offer. Whether you're exploring its ancient temples, indulging in its culinary delights, or immersing yourself in its modern culture, Korea promises an unforgettable experience for every traveler. Safe travels!
